Here in the St. Louis Area, we have 5 not-too-obscure plants that are in the Birch Family. They can be organized into 2 subfamilies:

Betuloideae Subfamily:

  • Alnus serrulata  (Smooth Alder)  [CC7]
  • Betula nigra  (River Birch)  [CC4]

Coryloideae Subfamily

  • Carpinus caroliniana  (Hornbeam)  [CC6]
  • Corylus americana  (Hazelnut)  [CC4]
  • Ostrya virginiana  (Hop-Hornbeam)  [CC4]
