Here in the St. Louis Area, we have 5 not-too-obscure plants that are in the Birch Family. They can be organized into 2 subfamilies:
Betuloideae Subfamily:
- Alnus serrulata (Smooth Alder) [CC7]
- Betula nigra (River Birch) [CC4]
Coryloideae Subfamily
- Carpinus caroliniana (Hornbeam) [CC6]
- Corylus americana (Hazelnut) [CC4]
- Ostrya virginiana (Hop-Hornbeam) [CC4]
